Fiľakovo: Castle, Town History and Nature

A medieval stone castle stands in the centre of Fiľakovo, built on volcanic tuff. Around this striking structure, town history, sacral architecture, an informative educational trail and landscape experiences combine to create a diverse townscape.

Exploration

The 505 m-long educational trail at Fiľakovo Castle is located within the castle grounds. On five panels, it provides information about the history of the castle, the natural conditions, vegetation, the geological structure of the castle hill and the surrounding landscape. Fiľakovo Castle is first mentioned in the mid-13th century.

Pedestrian access to Fiľakovo Castle is via Podhradská Street. Vehicle access to Fiľakovo Castle is via Baštová Street. The two designated types of access are therefore clearly separated from each other.

Fiľakovo’s digital travel guide provides information about approximately twenty historical sites via a map platform. It is available to visitors free of charge and allows them to explore Fiľakovo independently and at their own pace.

Culture

The Fiľakovo Town Museum has been housed since 1994 in the premises of the local Reduta building, the Vigadó. Its permanent exhibition traces the history of the town from the destruction of the castle in 1682, or from the resettlement of the small town, through to the 1960s.

A separate room of the exhibition is dedicated to the traditions of the local enamel factory or the local industrial enterprises. Thus, alongside the town’s history, the museum presentation also covers Fiľakovo’s industrial past.

The Franciscans shaped the spiritual life of Fiľakovo for centuries and remain closely connected with the town to this day. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was rebuilt as a single-nave church between 1694 and 1727 after the previous church had been destroyed by the Turks in 1544.

The architectural complex also includes the Franciscan monastery. It is a two-storey building with three wings and a central courtyard, was built between 1699 and 1727, and adjoins the church on its north-western side.

Nature

The castle hill of Fiľakovo forms a point feature within the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. Fiľakovo lies on the edge of the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area, which offers opportunities to explore nature and go hiking.

The town park is also part of the local natural setting. Rare, protected trees grow in Fiľakovo Town Park. The town park offers visitors relaxation and is home to a renovated zoo.
