Gregorova Vieska: Hotels, Sedem chotárov and Culture

Gregorova Vieska lies below Sedem chotárov on the southwestern edge of the Lučenec Basin. A marked hiking trail leads from Gregorova Vieska to the summit of Sedem chotárov.

Location

The 603 m-high summit of Sedem chotárov marks a boundary point of the territories of seven municipalities, or of the former count’s forest. The municipalities listed below include Podrečany, Gregorova Vieska, Stará Halič, Tuhár, Ružiná and Lovinobaňa. Thus, the summit is not only a destination above the village, but also has a historical and regional relationship with several municipalities.

Nature

The landscape around Gregorova Vieska includes oak forests, Turkey oak forests and rocky steppes with drought-tolerant plants. There is also a Lourdes grotto on the summit of Sedem chotárov. The different landscape forms and this individual site on the summit are among the specific natural features around Gregorova Vieska.

Culture

The bell tower of Gregorova Vieska, dating from 1723, is a cultural monument. On 4 May 1924, the play “Kubo” by J. Hollý was performed in Gregorova Vieska on the occasion of the consecration of the bells. Both details point to the connection between architectural heritage and local event life in the history of the village.

The former school building in Gregorova Vieska contained a room called “Babinec”, furnished with period-style furniture and household items. It also contained a library with more than 2,500 books. A bell in the former wooden bell tower of Gregorova Vieska bears an inscription stating that it was cast by Gregor in 1223. These historical references stand alongside a more recent chapter of craftsmanship: Since 1990, Libor Šimček had a workshop in Gregorova Vieska where he made and sold utilitarian ceramics.

The traditional folk culture of Gregorova Vieska included the erection of maypoles, spinning evenings, feather-dancing or feather-plucking evenings, carnival, the consecration of the bells on the first Sunday in September, and Christmas customs. Beekeeping is also among the village’s traditional associations: beehives were already kept in gardens in Gregorova Vieska in the past, and beekeeping became increasingly popular there.
