Mašková: Landscape and History

Archaeological excavations in Mašková uncovered a settlement of the Piliny culture and an extensive Bronze Age find. Mašková lies on the western edge of the Lučenec Basin, in a valley of the Mašková stream.

Other places on the same plain include Čakanovce, Mýtna, Radzovce, Ľuboreč, Šiatorská Bukovinka, Lehôtka, Ratka and Rapovce.

Landscape

The cadastral area of Mašková lies at an elevation of 186 to 389 metres above sea level. The higher western part of the cadastral area of Mašková consists predominantly of rhyodacitic and andesitic tuffs and is mainly forested with oaks and hornbeams. In the eastern part of the cadastral area of Mašková, there is hilly terrain on young Tertiary deposits, with islands of basalt and basalt tuff.

The area of Mašková is designated as a breeding site for the red-backed shrike.

Culture and History

Many experts consider the church in Mašková to be one of the oldest churches in Novohrad. The medieval church in Mašková was extended in 1793–94 by additions on the northern and southern sides, creating a cruciform floor plan. The tower of the church in Mašková was destroyed by artillery fire from German troops on 17 January 1945.

The museum in Mašková is located in the municipal office complex, in a former prayer house that was later used as a kindergarten. One of the three memorial rooms at the museum in Mašková recreates the furnishings of historic homes. Another memorial room commemorates personalities who worked in the municipality, including Daniel Maróthy, Koloman Banšel, Ján Maróthy, Martin Maróthy, Július Janko and Július Kokavec.

Events

The Maškovská hostina is held regularly in September and commemorates the anniversary of the church's consecration. Fašiangy is regularly held in Mašková as a children's carnival. Regular cultural events in Mašková include a liberation bonfire in May.

On 7 May 2025, a liberation bonfire was lit in Mašková to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation from fascism. The Maškovský ples took place on 7 February 2026, with dancing to music by the Novohrad Band.

Daily Life and Getting There

Mašková is easily accessible by public bus and has two bus stops, one of which is located in the village centre. The Mašková municipal library is located in the cultural centre. It is open on Tuesdays from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., has more than 200 books, mostly fiction and non-fiction, and includes a reading room.
