Žiar – History and Reformed Church

Žiar has been documented since 1324 and developed as a settlement of the lesser nobility. Agriculture, viticulture and the Reformed church point to different aspects of its history. The Turiec stream adds a connection to the landscape, which is also associated with a recreational opportunity.

History

The development of Žiar was not without setbacks. During the Ottoman wars, the locality suffered damage and was resettled in the 18th century. Historical occupations included agriculture and viticulture. These two areas are not only documented in the history of the locality, but also appear in the symbols on Žiar’s coat of arms: They commemorate local agriculture and viticulture.

Another cultural reference leads to the 18th century. Žiar is home to a Baroque batiste tablecloth for the communion table from this period, which is considered a cultural monument. Thus, alongside the written history and symbols of the locality, a specific testimony to sacred culture also takes center stage.

Culture

The Reformed church of Žiar was built in 1872. Its design follows the tradition of Neoclassical hall churches and was influenced by the local type represented by the church in Otročok. Inside, it has a wooden coffered ceiling. The church is in good condition and serves its religious purpose.

The church also has a memorial plaque commemorating the victims of both world wars. It was unveiled on 5 November 1995. A traditional custom is also part of Žiar’s culture: The raising of a maypole was associated with Pentecost.
