Sútor: Hotel, Ťahan Nature Reserve and Church History

Sútor is located in the Rimavská kotlina basin landscape, in the valley of a left-bank tributary of the Rimava. The locality combines a predominantly forested hilly landscape with historical traces, a distinctive church history and a natural setting closely connected with the surrounding area.

Nature

The Ťahan Nature Reserve is located in the cadastral territory of Sútor. Its boundaries are identical to those of the Natura 2000 site SKUEV0363 Ťahan. The protected area extends across the cadastral territories of Sútor and Tomášovce. Within the area, protection level 5 applies in Zone A and protection level 2 in Zone D.

Ťahan protects habitats of European importance: Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests (*91G0) and oak-Turkey oak forests (91M0). The rest of the municipality is also predominantly forested and lies in a hilly landscape. The forests of Sútor include oak-hornbeam stands with a proportion of beech, as well as oak and pine forests. Different forest communities therefore occur throughout the landscape alongside the protected natural area.

History

The first mention of Sútor dates from 1410. Initially, Sútor belonged to Blh Castle and later to the Muráň estate. A major turning point followed in 1566–1567, when Turkish troops devastated the locality. Records from 1828 state that the inhabitants of Sútor made pipes and brooms.

The cultural heritage also includes two folklore texts associated with Sútor, held by the Slovak Hungarian Text Folklore Archive: “A boszorkány halála” and “Mióta nincs Szútorban jó idő?”

Church and Tradition

The oldest monument in Sútor is the Reformed Church, built in 1810. It is a hall church with a straight-ended sanctuary and an attached tower projecting from the front. Today it stands as a roofless ruin, gradually being overtaken by vegetation.

In 2018, a symbolic farewell service was held at the Reformed Church. During the service, the bells in the tower rang for the last time before being removed and taken to the grounds of the Pauline monastery in Gombasek near Rožňava, which is undergoing restoration. The church is thus connected not only with the building history of the locality but also with a specific event in its more recent history.
