Hodejov: Hotel, Castle Ruins and Rolling Hills

Hodejov combines medieval history, archaeological traces, and paths through a distinctive hilly landscape. On the castle hill, in the village streetscape, and along regional routes, very different aspects of this Slovak locality come together.

History

The focal point is Hodejov Castle, a Gothic castle ruin of archaeological significance, whose origins are dated to before 1244. A castle was built on the hill above Hodejov in the second half of the 13th century. The castle withstood attacks by the Hussites and the Ottomans, but was conquered and devastated in 1574 after several attempts. Today, only scant remains of its foundation walls survive. The small Chapel of Saint Anne also stands on the castle hill.

Culture

Hodejov also preserves memories of various eras and uses. Sándor Petőfi stayed in Hodejov in 1846 and 1847. In the 19th century, iron baths operated here, and Hodejov also had a steam mill. A recurring tradition is the Saint Hubertus hunting celebration, which traditionally takes place every year in Hodejov.

The Hodejov Bronze Hoard is particularly significant and is considered one of the finest and scientifically most valuable finds in Slovakia. In 1961 and 1962, a total of 361 artifacts were collected in Hodejov, each of which conveys its own historical information. The site's archaeological significance thus extends from the medieval castle to individual surviving artifacts.

Village Streetscape

Hodejov's architectural heritage includes a manor house and a Neoclassical church. The manor house is a late Neoclassical building from 1865; its design was created by the Hungarian architect Miklós Ybl. Together with the chapel on the castle hill, these structures represent different historical layers of the locality, without reducing Hodejov to the ruins alone.

Landscape

The western part of Hodejov is crossed by the Cerová vrchovina hilly landscape, through which the Gortva stream also flows. Ragáč is a mountain in the vicinity of Hodejov, as is Bik. Paláska is a mountain in the wider regional surroundings of Hodejov; Magin Hrad also belongs to this wider regional area. The landscape therefore encompasses both the immediate surroundings and more distant regional connections.

Paths and Routes

Hodejov is the starting point of a green-marked hiking trail that leads to Steblová skala, Mount Ragáč, and Hajnáčka. The route therefore explicitly connects the locality with several named landscape destinations. In addition, Regional Route 2 leads from Blhovce via Hodejov to Jesenské. On a regional tourism route, visitors can drink mineral spring water in Hodejov. These routes complement the historical sites with specific trail connections and another regional link.
