Vyšný Skálnik is a place with natural, historical and cultural significance. These different aspects can be seen in the landscape, in surviving traces of earlier times and in local memorial sites.
Nature
Vyšný Skálnik lies in the southern part of the Slovak Ore Mountains, on the river floodplain and in the Rimava Valley. Decorative red marble was quarried in Vyšný Skálnik. A distinctive geological trace can be found in the sandstone on the western slopes of the volcanic cone Čelo (387 m): imprints of leaves and branches of hornbeam, chestnut, elm and willow have been preserved there. The location and the geological traces complement each other: the river floodplain and the Rimava Valley define the spatial setting, while the red marble and the imprints identify individual features of this setting.
History
Vyšný Skálnik is home to archaeological finds from the La Tène period (400–0 BC) as well as Celtic coins. The ruins of Maginhrad are located above Vyšný Skálnik. These two references point to different historical layers of the place: finds from a distant era and the ruins of Maginhrad above the settlement.
Things to do
The “In the Footsteps of Maginhrad” educational trail includes two stops at sandstone quarries. It begins at the Skálnik water reservoir in Vyšný Skálnik, can be reached by car or bus and is accessible year-round. The educational trail can be visited independently without prior arrangement. The water reservoir is used for recreation in summer and for winter sports in winter.
Culture
Vyšný Skálnik is the birthplace of the poet Ján Botto, a member of the Štúr generation (1829–1881). A memorial plaque is located on Ján Botto’s birthplace. The cultural centre houses a memorial room dedicated to Ján Botto, and a monument with a bust of the poet stands in front of the cultural centre. Thus, several specific memorial sites connected with him can be found in the village itself: the birthplace with its memorial plaque, the memorial room and the monument in front of the cultural centre.
When choosing a hotel or other accommodation, visitors can compare the available offers independently of the information about the place. The included services, individual price components and the terms for booking, changes and cancellations are also relevant. When there are several options, it is worth checking whether all travellers are included in the stated occupancy and whether any additional costs are clearly shown. For a fair comparison of costs, it is important to know which services are already included and which price components are listed separately. The terms for changes and cancellations may also vary. When comparing several offers, it is therefore worth taking a close look at these fields before travellers select an option. This makes differences between the individual offers visible when checking costs and terms.
