Bátka: Reformed Church and Settlement History

Bátka is particularly defined by its Reformed church and the history of its settlement areas. The 18th-century church is a local landmark. Its façade features a projecting tower with a pyramid roof, semicircular windows and pilaster articulation. The originally Neoclassical sacred building was mentioned as early as 1808 and remodelled in 1908. Today, the Reformed church is in very good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

History

The original settlement of Bátka was located on the right bank of the Balog River and later divided into Dolná Bátka, Horná Bátka and Stredná Bátka. Dolná Bátka and part of Gemer became a centre of the Reformed Church. Important church events of the Reformed Church took place there in the 19th century. By the mid-19th century, Dolná Bátka and Horná Bátka had grown into a single built-up settlement; in 1906, they were merged into one village. During the first 20 years of Czechoslovakia after the First World War, Bátka remained predominantly Hungarian-speaking. The inhabitants were mainly engaged in agriculture.

Culture

Another historic building is the manor house in Bátka. It is a single-storey, two-wing U-shaped building with side wings. Remains of a park destroyed by the village development have been preserved around the manor house. The Neoclassical manor house was built in 1895 on older foundations. Bátka therefore brings together different layers of its architectural and local history: the sacred building with its later alterations and the manor house with its older structural foundations.

Landscape

The use of the land along the Balog is also part of the village's inherited history. Historically, from spring until late autumn, the land on the left bank of the Balog stream was used by the inhabitants of Bátka as pasture for their animals. Bátka also has agricultural and fruit-growing traditions, which are regarded as advantages for the possible development of tourism. The combination of agriculture, fruit growing and historic settlement structures describes a rural character without reducing it to a single attraction.

Water and Fishing

The local landscape also includes the VN Bátka reservoir near Bátka. It is one of the most frequently visited fishing waters in the Rimavská Sobota area. MsO SRZ Rimavská Sobota offers its members extensive fishing opportunities in carp, trout and grayling waters; these include the VN Bátka reservoir near Bátka. This use is therefore tied both to membership and to the respective waters.

Cycling Route

A cross-regional connection adds another perspective: the published BRM600 Poiplie x Gemer x Hont cycling route passes through Bátka. Thus, alongside its religious and historical associations, the village also appears along a signposted or published route connection, without this implying any particular length of stay or stage planning.
