Bukovec: Reservoirs, Nature and Local History

Bukovec can be explored through its bodies of water, its distinctive location and its well-preserved appearance. These include a smaller reservoir with public access for recreational purposes, a large reservoir of major importance for wildlife, and the Vodná nádrž Pod Bukovcom reservoir with summer activities on the water. This picture is complemented by the ruins of Hrad Bukovec, houses dating from the early 20th century and the Roman Catholic Church of St. Anne.

Water and Recreation

The smaller Bukovec reservoir is open to the public for recreational purposes. At the Bukovec reservoir, you can rent paddleboards directly on site. In summer, the Vodná nádrž Pod Bukovcom reservoir offers opportunities for swimming, windsurfing and fishing. Two beaches are available at this reservoir during the summer season.

The large Bukovec reservoir is not open to the public. At the same time, it is an important habitat for waterfowl, amphibians, mammals, insects and reptiles. Bukovec therefore has bodies of water with different public access rules side by side: while the smaller Bukovec reservoir is accessible for recreational purposes, the large Bukovec reservoir remains closed to the public.

Landscape

The Ida stream flows through Bukovec. The village lies on the boundary between the Košice Basin and the Volovské vrchy mountains. This geographical location is just as much a part of the village’s character as the various bodies of water and the habitats around the large Bukovec reservoir.

History and Village Character

The ruins of Hrad Bukovec were first mentioned in 1330 in connection with the rule of Štefan Čurka. They can be reached from the Bukovec vodná nádrž signpost via a blue-marked hiking trail in about 10 minutes.

Several houses dating from the early 20th century have been preserved in Bukovec. These surviving houses represent typical traditional rural folk architecture from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The character of the village is therefore reflected not only in individual historic buildings, but also in the preserved rural architecture of this period.

Since 1971, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Anne has been a prominent ecclesiastical landmark of Bukovec. Together with the ruins of Hrad Bukovec and the preserved houses, it forms the ecclesiastical and architectural part of the village, while the bodies of water and the location between the Košice Basin and the Volovské vrchy mountains define its geographical setting.
