Žirany: Hotel, Culture and Nature

Žirany lies in the Žirany Pass at an elevation of 251 m, in the source area of the Hunták and Bocegaj streams. A written record from 1379 refers to an early connection between the village and wine: in it, the Esztergom Chapter established the right to import wine from Žirany. The landscape, paths and preserved buildings come together here with a local history dating back to the Middle Ages.

Culture

The Žirany Municipal Museum was established from an extension of a former shop and its storage area. It was ceremonially opened on 11 December 1977. Several chapels form part of the village’s sacred history: the Chapel of St Urban in the vineyards was built in 1795, the Chapel of St John of Nepomuk in Žirany dates from 1843, and the Chapel of St Vendelin in Žirany dates from 1912. A stone cross dating from 1823 also stands near the road in the rectory grounds of Žirany.

The history of the church building also extends across several construction phases. Žirany had a Baroque church dating from 1734; the present church building was newly constructed in 1938–1939. Preserved adobe houses with three rooms and hipped roofs can also be seen in the village. The Žirany folk house, also known as a tájház, houses an exhibition on folk culture. A memorial plaque is located in the vestibule of the Žirany cultural centre.

Nature

In the surroundings of Žirany, on the southern slopes and ridge of Žibrica, lies the 68.59-hectare Žibrica Nature Reserve. It represents a forest-steppe landscape and thermophilous deciduous forests on a limestone substrate. The geological character is also connected with the local economic history: in Žirany, hand quarrying of limestone and the production of quicklime in simple kilns on the eastern slopes of Vápenník and Žibrica have been documented since the 17th century.

Trails

The red-marked Ponitrianska Magistrála runs through Žirany. In addition, the Kostoliansky Educational Trail between Gýmeš and Kostolianske lúky in Žirany has stops 32, 33 and 34. Thus, two differently named trail connections are documented in the village: the magistral route running through Žirany and the educational trail with its three stops.

Leisure

The Žirany leisure centre includes an amphitheatre, a traffic-training area, swings, a slide, two tennis courts, a volleyball court and a concrete surface for mini-football. Žirany can be reached by regional bus services; parking is also available. Visits to the Žirany folk house must be arranged in advance.
