Jelšovce – Archaeology, the Nitra Landscape and Hotels

Jelšovce is a destination for travellers who do not want to view the landscape and local history separately. The municipality in the Nitra Loess Hills combines traces of early settlement with cultural, recreational and culinary experiences. Culture and History

The archaeological site of Jelšovce is one of the most impressive testimonies to the area's past. Systematic archaeological research uncovered 495 settlement structures and 447 inhumation graves across approximately two hectares. The oldest settlement traces at this site date to around 4500 BC. Settlement continued there almost uninterruptedly through the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Hallstatt period and La Tène period.

The Early Bronze Age cemetery of Jelšovce is particularly significant. It contains traces of the Nitra, Únětice and Maďarovce cultures and is considered the largest cemetery of its period researched to date in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It also holds a leading position in the Central European region. The most important monument in the municipality is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mary Magdalene.

Another form of cultural heritage is preserved by the Jelšovce Memorial House. Costumes, furniture, pictures, period room furnishings and a spinning wheel are displayed in three rooms – a chamber, kitchen and living room. The house thus preserves the material heritage of the ancestors in an illustrative spatial arrangement. Landscape

Jelšovce lies in the southeastern part of the Nitra Loess Hills, in the floodplain and on the terrace of the Nitra River. The unforested surface of the municipality's territory, located on hilly land and a floodplain, consists of Upper Tertiary deposits covered by loess and alluvial sediments. Chernozem and alluvial soils occur there. The landscape is therefore shaped not only by its location along the river, but also by different geological and soil layers.

The municipality's relationship with the river also includes a water-management structure. It is located at kilometre 72.105 of the Nitra River in the cadastral area of Jelšovce. The structure serves for energy generation, raising the water level for users with a water-rights permit, fish farming and recreational sports.

Activities and Recreation

An educational trail runs through Šibeje Park. There are also numerous activities for children and recreational areas. In the green ADIGAŠ sports area, a previously neglected football pitch was revitalised; its surroundings were expanded with activities for children, young people and adults. Alongside the historic sites, Jelšovce therefore also places areas at the centre that combine exercise, leisure and different age groups.

Local Culinary Culture

Pálenica Jelšovce offers experiential dining and guided tastings. Fruit spirits can also be distilled there from locally grown fruit. Both offerings remain closely connected with the specific location and its production practices.
