Čakajovce in the Danube Lowland – Church, Sculptures and Burial Ground

Čakajovce is located in the Danube Lowland on the right-bank floodplain of the Nitra River. At 146 metres above sea level, the village lies on deposits formed by the Nitra River. Its relief is uniform and flat. A section of the Nitra River approximately 2.5 kilometres long runs southeast of Čakajovce.

Church and Places of Remembrance

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Catherine of Alexandria in Čakajovce is a Renaissance church dating from 1697. Traces of a Romanesque building from the 13th to 14th centuries have been preserved in its masonry. The church is listed in the Central Register of the Monument Fund of the Slovak Republic. A chapel stands behind the bridge in the direction of Drážovce. The Solčanskí couple had it built in 1913 in memory of their 19-year-old son, who was fatally injured while working in Drážovský háj.

Further Cultural Traces

The wayside statue of Saint John of Nepomuk dates from 1844 and was moved beside the church during the construction of the railway line. A Slovak double cross stands in the Pantheon of Slovak Personalities. The pantheon was created in 1991 by Štefan Lahučký, who came from Čakajovce. Olivový vrch is a distinctive sculpture on the road to the church, situated on a hill and surrounded by well-maintained vegetation. The Erdődy manor house is a Baroque-Classical manor house from the 18th century that belonged to the Erdődy noble family. It is now privately owned and is generally not open to the public.

Archaeological Heritage

The Čakajovce burial site is one of the most extensive Early Medieval burial grounds in Slovakia. A total of 894 graves were examined at the Čakajovce burial ground. The Ponitrianske Museum in Nitra displays jewellery from the Čakajovce burial ground in the exhibition “Treasures of Ancient Slovakia”. Grave 13 at the Kostolné burial ground in Čakajovce contained a spherical bead.

These details bring together different historical layers: the church preserves Renaissance architecture and older Romanesque traces, while the chapel, wayside statue and pantheon each carry their own commemorative and local associations. The manor house adds an 18th-century building with private status to the cultural traces. Finally, the burial grounds lead from individual find details to the museum presentation of the jewellery in Nitra.
