Strekov: Vineyards, Wetland and Culture

Strekov has 300 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards of the Strekov wine region lie on southwest-facing slopes at an elevation of 200 to 240 metres; the region includes wine-growing communities from Mužla to Dvory nad Žitavou. Calcareous clay and loamy soils and special microclimatic conditions are considered particularly suitable for growing high-quality vines. Grape cultivation and winemaking have a long tradition among the families of Strekov.

Wine and Regional Tradition

The Strekovský vínny festival has taken place every year in July since 2008. The two-day event includes tastings of local and foreign wines among vineyards and cellars. During the wine festivals, Emma Winery offers visitors tastings of its natural wines. On request, Kasnyik Family Winery can arrange wine tastings in a family atmosphere, along with tours of the winery and vineyards. A tour leads through 180 cellars in five rows of vineyards and conveys the unique atmosphere of the vineyards.

The Kőtésfesztivál takes place every spring at the community centre in Strekov. Since 2004, it has been dedicated to preserving traditional fasting dishes from earlier generations. The festival presents Kőtés as a traditional Hungarian fasting dish and contributes to its reintroduction into Hungarian gastronomic culture. The Strekovský autentický dvor will take place for the thirteenth time in 2026.

Nature

The protected Parížske močiare wetland also includes parts of Strekov’s cadastral area. Parížske močiare is the only place in Slovakia where the breeding of the very rare Moustached Warbler (Acrocephalus melanopogon) has been reliably documented. The bodies of water with stands of reeds, bulrushes and sedges provide suitable breeding habitat for other significant bird species, including the Little Crake (Porzana parva), Garganey (Anas querquedula) and Little Bittern (Ixobrychus minutus).

Culture and History

A calvary is located at the pilgrimage site of Cigléd, outside the built-up area of Strekov. The Stations of the Cross in Cigléd connect two chapels. Strekov is home to the Baroque All Saints Church, built in 1755 and reconstructed in 1929. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

Trails

The Strekov–Svodín Educational Trail is 9.6 kilometres long. The information panels of the planned Strekov–Svodín Educational Trail cover rare animal and plant species in the surrounding landscape, the pilgrimage site of Cigléd, folk traditions, cultural and historical monuments in Strekov and Svodín, and the Central European Marian Way. Six information panels, each measuring 1.8 × 1.2 metres, and twelve signposts were produced for the planned trail. The trail is intended to start and end at the Roman Catholic churches in Strekov and Svodín.
