Svrbice – Hiking, Nature and Hotels

Svrbice lies at the western tip of the Okres Topoľčany district, at the eastern foothills of the Považský Inovec. The village is located on the edge of the Nitrianska sprašová pahorkatina and the Považský Inovec; the two landscape areas also differ geologically. Two differently shaped landscapes therefore meet directly here.

Landscape and Nature

The Považský Inovec near Svrbice is considered a forested mountain range with diverse fauna and flora. The local fauna includes foxes, badgers, squirrels, wild boar, roe deer and red deer. The local bird list includes owls, kestrels and pheasants. The plants mentioned include beeches, oaks, hornbeams and birches. Together, these lists provide a concrete picture of the natural surroundings without reducing them to a single type of landscape.

Hiking and Cycling

One clearly named hiking route is the Svrbická stopa: it is an easy, seven-kilometre hike from Havran to Svrbice. In the municipality's 2023 report, the Svrbická stopa was described as a traditional event in Svrbice. In the 2025 edition, one route led from Havran to Svrbice, while a new circular route began in Svrbice; both routes were approximately seven kilometres long. Thus, both the connection between Havran and Svrbice and a circular route beginning in Svrbice are expressly mentioned for this event year. In addition, cycling route 044 – Okolo Považského Inovca passes through Svrbice.

Events and Local Tradition

The programme of Jánske ohne in 2022 included an easy hike, children's games, and a cultural and sports programme. On 25 June 2022, the 37th edition of the JÁNSKE OHNE event took place at Svrbická Hôrka. Goulash and refreshments were also offered at Jánske ohne in Svrbice as a long-standing local tradition. The programme items mentioned combine exercise, games and community events with a local culinary element.

History and Church

Svrbice was first documented in 1268 under the name Surbich. The settlement of Tešín, mentioned in 1414, was later incorporated into Svrbice; the settlement of Drin, mentioned in 1620, was also later incorporated into Svrbice. In 1715, Svrbice had vineyards. Agriculture and viticulture were among the village's historical occupations. During the Second World War, part of the population of Svrbice took part in the partisan movement and the Slovak National Uprising.

The Roman Catholic Church of Panny Márie Kráľovnej pokoja stands in Svrbice. The branch church, built in 1956, was consecrated in 1957 and is assigned to the parish of Ardanovce in the Radošina Deanery.
