Hotels in Čermany – Churches, Local History and Protected Nature
Čermany is located in the central part of the Nitrianska pahorkatina. Its history can be traced archaeologically back to the 8th century: settlement has been documented since that time. The oldest written mention dates from 1257; at that time, the place was referred to as “CHERMEN”. The settlement also served as a military and trading station on a Roman road in the Germanic hinterland.
History
Between 1857 and 1861, German residents from Hanover and Oldenburg moved to Čermany. The municipality was settled by farmers from northern Germany. The German settlers made wooden shoes and were also involved in clearing forests and agriculture. Thus, the local history includes not only the early written mention but also specific information about the origins, work and economic activities of the later inhabitants.
Church and Architectural History
In the southern part of Čermany stands the Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie church on a small hill elevated towards the west. It is visible from all parts of the municipality. The neoclassical church was originally a Renaissance church, was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1760 and renovated in 1813. A Renaissance wall with keyhole loopholes, which surrounds the church, has also been preserved.
Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie is a single-nave church with a polygonal presbytery termination, an attached sacristy and a projecting tower. Its architectural history thus combines several clearly distinguishable phases: the original Renaissance building, the Baroque reconstruction of 1760, the renovation of 1813 and the neoclassical form in which the church is described today.
Chapel and Monuments
The Kaplnka Zmŕtvychvstalého cemetery chapel in Čermany dates from 1892. Three sarcophagi are located in the underground rooms of the cemetery chapel. The village also has a late Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the late 18th century.
A late Neoclassical column with a roadside sculpture of the Holy Trinity was erected in 1868 by Štefan Laluch and his wife. The statue of the Sacred Heart with a sculpture of Christ in the center of Čermany was erected on June 3, 1932; the names of all soldiers who fell in the First World War are commemorated on the monument. The Čermany First World War Memorial is a unique ceramic monument with German names.
