Brunovce – Cultural History and Cycling along the Váh

Brunovce combines cultural history with the landscape along the Váh. Different historical periods and uses stand side by side here, giving the place a clearly structured yet diverse character.

Culture

The site of today’s municipality of Brunovce was home to a burial ground of the Únětice culture from the Early Bronze Age. In the second half of the 17th century, the Bercsényi family built the manor house of Brunovce. It originally had an enclosed four-wing layout. A moat fed by the Váh formed part of its external fortifications.

The former château chapel retains rich Mannerist stucco decoration on its vaults dating from the second half of the 17th century. At the entrance to the park stands a Rococo statue of Saint John of Nepomuk from the second third of the 18th century. The cultural monument in Brunovce associated with this English park is state-owned.

Craft activities are also part of the locality’s history: in the past, women in Brunovce made lace and produced embroidery. These two activities point to an earlier, craft-oriented aspect of community life.

Landscape

An English park was laid out at the manor house of Brunovce in the 19th century. The park south of the manor house was largely transformed from formal gardens into a naturalistic and landscape-designed park; in connection with the building, a simplified formal parterre was retained. Thus, within the same grounds, the formal proximity to the building and the later landscape-designed park area stand side by side.

Cycling

The pedestrian and cycling bridge in Brunovce over the Váh provides a crossing between Nové Mesto nad Váhom and Piešťany. It was built between 1976 and 1978. The bridge is currently closed because of its inadequate technical condition.

The cycling route directly connects the cadastral areas of Horná Streda, Brunovce, Potvorice and Považany with the town of Nové Mesto nad Váhom. It is 13.4 kilometres long, is a leisure route and is suitable for all age groups, including children. The route runs along the crest of the Váh flood protection embankment.
