Discover Bošany: Hotels, St Martin’s Church and the Kastell

The Church of St Martin the Bishop in Bošany combines a long history with a clearly recognisable late Baroque structure. The original Church of St Martin the Bishop in Bošany was first mentioned in 1332. The present single-nave building with an integrated tower was completed in 1776 in the late Baroque style. The church also contains an altarpiece of St Martin dating from 1776.

Culture

The old Renaissance Kastell of the Bossányiovci family is located directly in the centre of Bošany. The fortified Kastell had polygonal bastions and a surrounding moat. The Baroque-Classical Kastell was built in 1776 by Ignác Bošáni and his wife Terézia. Authentically preserved façades and a well-preserved interior characterise the historic building. The Renaissance Kastell is currently undergoing extensive reconstruction for use as a congress centre. The preserved Baroque-Classical Kastell is privately owned and serves cultural and social purposes.

Smaller monuments also form part of the townscape. A Baroque statue of St Florian stands in front of the Bossányiovci family’s Kastell in the centre of Bošany. The statue of St John of Nepomuk, restored in 2001, still stands in front of the municipal office. Both locations complement the larger buildings with independent sacred and historical testimonies.

History

The sacred history of Bošany includes the upper chapel, which was built in 1725 at the suggestion of Mikuláš Bošáni. Services are held in the upper chapel during Marian feasts. The Red Chapel contains an image of the Virgin Mary, a statue of Our Lady of Sorrows and a cross. In the past, the Red Chapel was used on procession days and days of supplication for the harvest. Its former function therefore remains distinct in time from the present use of the upper chapel.

Park and Events

A new park with a pond was created on the grounds of the former park beside the Baroque-Classical Kastell. Events regularly held in Bošany include the Bošiansky jarmok.
