Hotels in Bystricany – Thermal Spa, Nature Reserve and Vtáčnik

Bystričany combines tangible nature experiences with a thermal spa, regional culture and historic sites. The cadastral area contains the Veľká skala National Nature Reserve, while trails to the Malý Lubín viewpoint and Vtáčnik reveal different landscapes. Other attractions include the Chalmová Thermal Spa, Farma pod Vtáčnikom, several churches, Chalmová Castle and traditional events.

Nature and Landscape

The Veľká skala National Nature Reserve was established in 1984 on an area of 59.2 hectares and is subject to the fifth level of protection. Its original primeval forest character has been preserved because unstable andesite bedrock prevented mining in the nature reserve. The Hrádok climbing area is also located in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area and in a Natura 2000 protected area. It offers more than 80 routes of varying difficulty.

A small observation tower stands at the Malý Lubín viewpoint. From there, the view extends across the Upper Nitra Lowland and to the Vtáčnik and Tribeč mountain ranges. A stainless-steel cross stands on the summit of Vtáčnik; from there, too, views open across the Upper Nitra Lowland and the surrounding mountains.

Hiking Trails and Active Experiences

The Chalmová Forest Educational Trail leads from the car park near the Chalmová Thermal Spa to the Malý Lubín viewpoint, passing a wooden chapel dedicated to Saint Hubert along the way. The Bystričiansky Circuit starts at the entrance to the Chalmová Thermal Spa, is 17.5 kilometres long and has six information boards. Visitors follow asphalt and field roads through Bystričany and its surroundings; the circuit can be completed on foot or by bicycle.

The blue-marked Route 2604 leads from Bystričany through the Bystričianska Valley to Vtáčnik. It is 14.2 kilometres long and has been named the Chodník Petra Školnu since 2003. The summit of Vtáčnik can also be reached from Bystričany via a blue-marked hiking trail. Every August, Bystričany organizes an ascent of Vtáčnik, linked to commemorative events marking the Slovak National Uprising.

Thermal Spa and Regional Experiences

The Chalmová Thermal Spa has two outdoor pools: a swimming pool up to 25 metres long and a second outdoor pool with water attractions and a children's paddling area. The spring water is considered moderately mineralized and has a temperature of 24 to 40 degrees Celsius. The thermal spa also offers attractions for children and a volleyball court.

Farma pod Vtáčnikom produces fresh sheep's cheese, smoked sheep's cheese, sheep's bryndza, matured cheeses and cow's milk cheese strings from freshly milked milk. Farma pod Vtáčnikom offers visitors draught beer and farm-produced cheese products. The facilities also include a children's playground, archery and various games; throughout the year, Farma hosts experiential events.

Culture and History

The Romanesque Church of Saint Anne in Chalmová was built in the 12th century on a hill behind the village, in the middle of a cemetery. In 1730, it was expanded with a larger, transversely arranged nave and a projecting tower. The pilgrimage to this church resumed in 1990 after a long interruption.

Chalmová Castle and its park are registered as a national cultural monument. Originally built in the Renaissance style, the castle was constructed in the first half of the 17th century. It was later rebuilt and redesigned in the Classicist style, and expanded in the second third of the 19th century. A historic park with valuable trees, an entrance avenue and a pond was created around the castle. On 15 August 2026, Chalmová Castle reopened to the public after being closed for many years. The opening featured guided tours with commentary, historical photographs and exhibitions.

In Bystričany, the Church of the Most Holy Trinity began as a Classicist chapel built in 1808. It was redesigned in 1841 and expanded into a church in the second half of the 19th century.

Traditions and Events

The Bystričany Village Days are traditional celebrations in the village of Bystričany. Sadenie mája is a traditional cultural event in Bystričany, held in 2025. During the event, volunteer firefighters plant the maypole; there is also a programme by children and local folk music.
