Hotel in Temeš: Hiking Trails, Protected Areas and Folk Traditions

Temeš is located in the southern part of the Strážovská hornatina in a deep, short, left-side valley of the Belanka stream. The locality combines this distinctive landscape with paths through the mountains, protected areas, a sacred building and living traditions.

Landscape and Nature

The Temešská skala protected area lies in the cadastral territories of Temeš and Čavoj and has the fifth level of protection. This is distinct from the European protected area Temešská skala, which includes areas above the municipality of Čavoj. These areas are intended to be preserved or kept free of woody growth, particularly because of the occurrence of the rare, European-law-significant long-leaved ragwort, subspecies Tephroseris longifolia subsp. moravica. In Slovakia, this subspecies occurs at only a few known sites. The proportion of forests can also be stated precisely: forest areas account for 62 % of the non-agricultural area of Temeš.

Hiking and Cycling

Cycling routes pass through Temeš. The Bojnický cyklookruh leads from Čavoj via Temeš onwards to Nevidzany. Several marked connections with clear route details are described for hiking. The marked hiking trail 8403 connects Temeš and Liešťany over 11.7 km. The also-marked hiking trail 8403V connects Temešské sedlo and Temešská skala over 0.2 km.

A longer hiking route through the Strážovské vrchy begins in Temeš and leads via Temešská skala, Malá Magura and Magura to Bojnice. The Temeš–Malá Magura–Bojnice route has a total elevation difference of 822 m. A hiking route from Temeš to Bojnice via Temešská skala and Malá Magura is listed as 18 km. This provides both short marked connections and a considerably longer route via several mountain points for route planning, with the respective distances and elevation difference to be considered separately.

Culture and Architecture

The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes stands in the locality. It was built in 1926 in a delayed Neoclassical style. The chapel is a single-nave building with a rectangular floor plan and an attached tower at the front. The locality’s cultural institutions also include the Košarinka folklore group, founded in 1999. Its repertoire includes folk games, customs, songs and dances.

The members of the Košarinka folklore group still perform today in original folk costumes, some of which are more than one hundred years old. Some women still master the techniques of sewing, embroidering and decorating folk costumes. Thus, alongside the forms of folk culture presented above, the craftsmanship and knowledge surrounding the costumes are also central.

Folk Traditions beneath Temešská skala

The Day of Folk Traditions beneath Temešská skala brings together residents, people native to Temeš and residents of other municipalities. At one edition of the event, tasty culinary products from women from Temeš and hunters were offered throughout the day. The municipality of Temeš held the day annually in August.
