Jalovec: Historical Traces and Hotels

Jalovec reveals several clearly identifiable traces of Slovak ecclesiastical, craft and local history. The streams flowing through the village and the high-altitude Jalovské Lazy add to these features.

Culture

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Kostol Božského srdca Ježišovho in Slovak, is the central landmark. It was built in 1927 in the historicist style with neoclassical and neo-Romanesque elements. It was reconsecrated on 27 September 1992; the building had originally served as a chapel of the Virgin Mary. A monument to those who fell in the Second World War stands next to the church.

Older craft traditions are also among the traces preserved in Jalovec. Woven brooms were made there in the 16th century. In the mid-19th century, shingles and birchwood rings were added, followed later by shepherds’ vessels, fujaras and pipes. Stone storage buildings from the 19th century have also been preserved in the village. They stand alongside further evidence of a past shaped by crafts and forestry.

History

In the Huňov forest within the municipality of Jalovec, the Pálffys built a glassworks with five melting furnaces in 1749–1750. Traces of the foundations and shards of glass remain at the former site of the Huňov glassworks.

A partisan bunker was built at Humnište in 1944 as accommodation for the Slovan Ráztočno partisan unit. In 2014, it was restored on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising and opened to the public. The remains of the Pálffyovský Mill are also still visible in Jalovec. After the founding of the CSR, the mill and the sawmill belonging to Jozef Solčáni processed 400 m³ of wood annually. Their equipment included a wooden saw frame and a circular saw.

Landscape

The Handlovka and the Jalovský potok flow through Jalovec. The Jalovské Lazy are also located within the village’s territory, at an elevation of more than 800 m; this area includes a small meadow. These specific landscape features complement the historical sites with waterways and a higher-elevation open area.

The 11.6 km-long Nedožery–Brezany–Malá Čausa–Chrenovec–Jalovec–Ráztočno–Remata cycling route passes through Jalovec. The complete sequence of the route names both Jalovec and the route’s other stations, placing the village within this itinerary.
