Cigeľ: Landscapes, Cross-Country Skiing and Mining History

Cigeľ lies at the northwestern foot of the Vtáčnik Mountains, in a valley carved out by the Ciglianka stream. With sufficient snow cover, around 40 km of cross-country ski trails are available in Cigeľ.

Nature

Route P1 of the Pochod vďaky SNP leads from Cigeľ via Biely kameň back to Cigeľ. It is 13 km long, has an elevation gain of 668 m and is of medium difficulty. Route length, elevation gain and difficulty can be compared separately.

Winter

The Cigeľ ski resort has an elevation difference of 195 m. The valley station is located at 630 m, while the highest point of the ski resort is at 825 m.

Culture and History

The Izba ľudových a revolučných tradícií is housed in a former family home. It brings together written and photographic material on the development of the municipality from the beginning of this century to the present day, as well as extensive material on the origins and course of the Slovak National Uprising in Cigeľ and the Vtáčnik Mountains.

The Kostol sv. Matúša church in Cigeľ was built in 1762 on the site of a wooden church. It was reconstructed in 1912, and its tower was added in 1939.

Together with the materials in the Izba, this provides two different historical perspectives: a specific building, as well as written and photographic evidence relating to the municipality and the uprising.

Jančekova Skala is a mountain in the immediate vicinity of Cigeľ. Biela Skala is also a mountain in the immediate vicinity of Cigeľ. Veľký Gryč is a mountain in the vicinity of Cigeľ, as is Malý Gryč. Púšť is a church in the vicinity of Cigeľ; Svätý Vendelín is also a church in the surrounding area. The Šášov and Zniev ruins are located in the wider regional surroundings of Cigeľ.

Mining

Baňa Cigeľ is located in the area surrounding Cigeľ, in the cadastral territory of the municipality of Sebedražie; some of its rooms serve as a mining museum, with the option of entering the underground. The guided tour of the Hornonitrianskeho banského skanzenu Baňa Cigeľ, which begins in the area surrounding Cigeľ, starts with a 2,312-metre journey by mine train into a lignite mine. It continues with a 566-metre walk at a minimum depth of 80 metres below the surface through underground mine workings in the former Section II of the mining area.
