Opatovce nad Nitrou combines the landscape along the Nitra with historical traces, religious buildings and events that showcase regional traditions. The town therefore offers several clearly distinct themes: predominantly flat to hilly surroundings, documented history, ecclesiastical buildings, a cycle route running through the town and community life with regular cultural events.
Nature
The Nitra forms almost the entire southeastern boundary of the Opatovce nad Nitrou area. Another geographical boundary is the Teplý potok, which separates Opatovce nad Nitrou from Bojnice. The terrain around the town is predominantly flat to hilly. The Ponitrianska cycle route also runs through Opatovce nad Nitrou along the Nitra. Its route follows a cycle path in some sections and local asphalt roads in others.
History
The Zobor Charter of 1113 is an important historical document associated with Opatovce nad Nitrou. The town was first mentioned in writing in 1424 under the name Apathy. In 1468, Opatovce nad Nitrou became part of the bishop's domain centered in Skačany. These three dates mark different stages in the documented history of the town: an early historical document, the first written mention under a different name and its later incorporation into a bishop's domain.
Culture
The local religious landscape includes the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, which was consecrated on November 22, 1998. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary is a landmark in the upper part of Opatovce nad Nitrou. It was completed in spring 1939; the first Holy Mass was celebrated there in May. The tradition of May Masses has been maintained in the chapel to this day. There is also a small brick Neoclassical wayside shrine called Božie muky on the road to Koš.
Events
Customs and community occasions are also part of the town's traditional character. The traditional lighting of a bonfire for St. John's Eve was part of an event and symbolically recalled customs celebrating the summer solstice. The event included tastings of specialties from Opatovce nad Nitrou.
On May 1, 2026, Opatovce nad Nitrou hosted the traditional “stavanie májov,” the raising of the maypole. The all-day program included sports competitions, attractions for children, an extensive cultural program and an evening dance. “Nositelia tradícií” also includes a regional round of a competition and showcase of folk groups. In Opatovce nad Nitrou, the municipality organizes a procession every year together with the Volunteer Fire Department.
