Veľká Čausa: Culture, Nature and Family Activities

Veľká Čausa combines a clearly defined location in the Upper Nitra Basin with local history, religious buildings, protected linden trees and a range of leisure activities. The municipality lies in the southeastern part of the Upper Nitra Basin along the middle course of the Handlovka. The town center is situated at an altitude of 312 meters, while the municipal area extends from 285 to 361 meters above sea level.

History and Religious Buildings

Settlement in Veľká Čausa is believed to have begun in the 12th century; the village was first mentioned in writing in 1358. A deed of gift from 1430 lists Veľká Čausa under the historical name “Nagy Cheuche.” The more recent local history includes the Church of Saint Gorazd. Its foundation stone was blessed by Pope John Paul II in Vajnory on April 22, 1990. The modern single-nave church was consecrated on May 30, 1999, and is a filial church.

During the construction of the church, the chapel in Veľká Čausa was expanded for worship services; it was completely renovated in 2015. A restored war grave is also among the listed memorial sites: the grave of Jozef Počuch commemorates a soldier who fell during the Slovak National Uprising.

Nature

Two large-leaved linden trees stand in the cemetery and were designated protected natural monuments in 1975. Their trunk circumferences are 353 and 441 centimeters, and their heights are 25 and 24 meters. Thus, both the trees’ protected status and their specific measurements form part of the local landscape.

Leisure and Public Places

Veľká Čausa’s local leisure activities include hiking, cycling, hunting, fishing and mushroom picking. Sports facilities with workout equipment and children’s playgrounds have been built in public areas. A small marketplace has also been built in Veľká Čausa.

Another attraction is the Koliba Pacho Resort in Veľká Čausa. It has an 18-hole minigolf course and an outdoor children’s playground. The cycle paths from Koliba Pacho Resort connect to other officially signposted cycle routes. The Koliba Pacho restaurant serves regional food and drinks.

Culture

Veľká Čausa’s cultural scene includes the Dúbravka folklore group. It has been active in Veľká Čausa since 1983 and performs at cultural and entertainment events both in the village and elsewhere. Veľká Čausa is also a center for the traditional craft of making Easter eggs. These two features combine lively community association activities with a tradition-based craft without limiting the village to just one historical period.
