Malá Čausa – Culture, History and Cycling Routes in the Žiar Mountains

Malá Čausa lies on the southern slope of the Žiar Mountains in the valley of the small Čausanka (Čermel) stream. The settlement extends in a north-south direction along the Čausanka (Čermel). Landscape, traditional crafts and historic architectural forms stand side by side here.

Culture

ÚĽUV lists Margita Šimková as an ÚĽUV master craftsperson for the production of Easter eggs; her place of activity is Malá Čausa in the Prievidza District of the Trenčín Region. She produces batik-decorated Easter eggs, eggs decorated with raised wax designs and eggs covered with straw. After 2000, she also added the perforation technique to her repertoire. Mária Kršková also decorates Easter eggs using the relief-wax technique and masters the Madeiro technique.

Malá Čausa is considered an Old Slavic settlement from the 12th century and is documented under the historical name “Kys Chewche” in a deed of donation issued by King Sigismund for the Noffry brothers in 1430. The oldest houses were built from unfired bricks. It was only in the final decade before 1900 that people began building with stone, following the example of the German houses in Handlová. The domestic production of wooden shingles was a local source of income in the 18th and 19th centuries. Traditional houses with earthen floors can still be found today.

The Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary is a single-nave Neoclassical building dating from 1902. It was renovated in 2002; it is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. The SNP monument in Malá Čausa was unveiled on 27 August 1972 to mark the 28th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising.

Nature

The natural features of the locality include two protected lime trees in a cemetery in Malá Čausa. Their location within the cemetery and their connection to the settlement remain as specific as the locality’s setting on the southern slope of the Žiar Mountains and along the Čausanka (Čermel).

Sports and Leisure

A reconstructed grandstand is located at the football field in Malá Čausa. The leisure activity complex with a multifunctional sports field is considered a sports and cultural centre for residents and visitors to the municipality.

Cycling

The Bojnice cycling circuit includes a 20 km section within the microregion that runs through Handlová, Ráztočno, Jalovec, Chrenovec, Malá Čausa and Brezany. From Malá Čausa, the route continues for another 3 km to Jalovec, then for approximately 2 km in the direction of Ráztočno, and ends after the final approximately 2.5 km at the quarry in Remata.

On the cycling route, after 3.5 km through the forest on a paved path, there is a turn-off to Malá Čausa. A 16.3 km-long cycling route has a moderate difficulty level, is also suitable for older children and runs along asphalt, paved and unpaved forest paths.
