Zemianske Kostoľany: Renaissance Buildings and Churches

Zemianske Kostoľany combines its location on the banks of the Nitra River with a series of historic buildings. Renaissance buildings, a residential tower, a kúria and several churches give the locality a cultural and historical profile, while Malá Magura and Vtáčnik form its geographical setting.

Landscape

Zemianske Kostoľany lies on the banks of the Nitra River. To the west, the locality is bordered by the southern foothills of Malá Magura. To the east, the ridges of Vtáčnik form the boundary. The river, western foothills and eastern ridges are therefore the three named elements of the local landscape.

Culture

The Renesančný kaštieľ was built around 1570 and later remodelled. Typical Renaissance elements have been preserved. The building also includes a publicly accessible Renaissance park.

The Karolkin kaštieľ was built in the first half of the 17th century in the Renaissance style. At the end of the 19th century, the building was remodelled. Another historic complex is the Kišasonkin kaštieľ: it was built in 1727, had an additional storey added in 1818, and was converted in 1836 into an Empire-style villa with an open columned loggia.

The Obytná veža was built around 1570 and is the oldest building in Zemianske Kostoľany, with the exception of the Dolné Lelovce district. It originally served as a residential tower, an unusual function for this type of building. The Jožičkina kúria is considered a typical example of the traditional residence of the lower nobility. Various types of vaulting have been preserved in the single-storey building, including barrel, lunette, Prussian and cross vaults.

History

The locality's churches also display various historical and stylistic references. The Roman Catholic Church of sv. Jána Krstiteľa was built in 1699–1701 in the Pseudo-Renaissance and early Baroque styles.

The Church of Kostol Narodenia Panny Márie is located in the Dolné Lelovce district of Zemianske Kostoľany. Its Romanesque origins date from the 12th century to the first half of the 13th century.

Permission to build the evangelical articulated church in Zemianske Kostoľany was granted in 1734; its consecration took place in 1736. An old cemetery surrounds the evangelical church.
