Matúškovo: Churches, Folk Architecture and Cycling Route

Matúškovo lies in the flat Danubian Lowland in southwestern Slovakia. The Váh River is located near the village, while the Šárd stream flows through Matúškovo. The landscape and appearance of the village are therefore shaped by the wide plain as well as by the bodies of water in the surrounding area and in the village itself.

Culture

The built heritage of Matúškovo includes several churches and historic landmarks. The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque-Classical building erected between 1781 and 1784 on the site of an older church. Its furnishings include a 19th-century Classical side altar and a pulpit decorated with reliefs of the Evangelists. The church also contains an altarpiece depicting the Nativity of Mary, painted by Than Mór in 1871.

The Evangelical church in Matúškovo was designed by Ing. arch. Vavrinec Perleczky and ceremonially handed over in 1992. Opposite the Roman Catholic Church stands the rectory built in 1774, considered the oldest building in Matúškovo. A stone folk statue of Saint Vendelín stands on the road toward Diakovce. It dates from the second half of the 19th century and depicts the patron saint of domestic animals.

The stone column of the Holy Trinity stands in the village square. It was commissioned by František Lenárt in 1851. The wayside shrine known as “Božia muka,” classified as a cultural monument, dates from the first half of the 19th century. Its column chapel has a pointed-arch opening and is crowned with a double cross.

Local History

The listed Dom ľudového bývania in Matúškovo was built in 1847 and is an example of traditional folk architecture in southwestern Slovakia. An ethnographic exhibition was opened to the public in this building in 1984. It presents the way of life of the original population at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as that of Slovaks who moved from Dolná zem in 1947. Visitors can see richly decorated furniture, handwoven carpets and other everyday objects there.

Cycling

The “Po stopách vodných mlynov” cycling route, also known as the “Galantský Cyklookruh,” passes through Matúškovo. It is 64 km long and bears the number 2210.

Events

The youth organization in Matúškovo regularly organizes the traditional cultural event “Stretnutie hudobníkov” at the stadium. The Hodové oslavy in Matúškovo take place on September 8.
