Okoč: Hotel, Churches, Manor House and Nature on the Malý Dunaj
Okoč combines a multifaceted sacred history with preserved architectural monuments and the year-round activities of the Malý Dunaj region. Between churches, memorials, traditional crafts and the protected park of a manor house, there are various points of interest for a trip where culture and landscape stand side by side.
Culture
At the center of Okoč’s sacred heritage is the Roman Catholic Church built in 1789 in the Baroque-Classical style and dedicated to Saint Vendelín. Its main altar painting depicts Saint Vendelín and dates from the late 18th century. Originally, the church had a single nave; at the beginning of the 20th century, it was extended on both sides. In the courtyard of St. Vendelín’s Church, there is also a statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, commissioned in 1863.
The roadside chapel of Saint Vendelín in Okoč dates from the 18th century. It contains a painted stone statue. The village’s Reformed Church also bears witness to several construction phases: it was built in 1822, probably on the site of a 1788 prayer house made of adobe bricks with a thatched roof. The tower was added in 1901, at the same time as the façade was renovated.
History
In Opatovský Sokolec, there is a significant neoclassical architectural monument from the second third of the 19th century: the manor house. The park surrounding the building is under state protection. Also in Opatovský Sokolec, the Reformed Church features an artistically carved and painted pulpit and a gallery, both of which are cultural monuments.
The memorials in Okoč and Opatovský Sokolec commemorate local residents who died in the First and Second World Wars. Thus, alongside churches and secular architecture, memorial sites also form part of the village landscape.
Crafts
Okoč’s local folk and artistic craft heritage includes gingerbread baking. The tradition complements the architectural heritage with an aspect of everyday and inherited craftsmanship.
Nature and Activities
In the surroundings of Okoč, the Malý Dunaj region offers year-round walks, sporting activities, cycling and fishing. During the summer, paddling trips and camping are added. The distinction by season is clear: the first activities are mentioned as year-round, while paddling trips and camping are expressly limited to the warm season.
