Hotels in Boršt – Cultural Heritage and Cycling Route K1 in Refošk Country

Boršt lies at an altitude of 353 metres above sea level on Mount Varda. The village is officially recognised as part of Slovenia’s immovable cultural heritage. Its cultural landscape is characterised by dissected flysch hills and agricultural levelled areas on ridges above river valleys. From Boršt, there are views of the Starec stream valley, Koper and Trieste, and in clear weather of the entire Gulf of Trieste.

Culture

Next to the old school, the Boršt Mediterranean Garden was opened. It is intended to serve as a didactic educational centre for the preservation and promotion of the traditional plant life and cuisine of the northern Adriatic region. The garden includes themed beds with herbs, fruit and vegetables.

The local sacred landscape includes the Chapel of St Nazarij in Boršt. It is dedicated to the first Bishop of Koper and patron saint of the city of Koper. Celebrations in honour of St Nazarij are held there every year on 19 June. The celebration includes a Holy Mass and a procession with the brass band Mužika sv. Lazar Boršt. The Church of St Roch and St Sebastian in Boršt dates from the 13th century and is known for its Romanesque architecture and Baroque-style interior.

History

During the Second World War, Boršt served as an important refuge. During this period, the Koper city command operated in the area around Boršt. A specific wartime event is associated with 30 January 1945: during the Second World War, an American pilot parachuted into Boršt that day from a crashing aircraft; the villagers hid him and helped him. The Monument to the Landing of the American Paratrooper commemorates this wartime event in Boršt.

On 8 February, Slovenia’s cultural holiday, a traditional hike to the Frenk Bunker is organised in Boršt.

Landscape and Surroundings

Semi, a mountain, lies in the immediate vicinity of Boršt. Brajkov Vrh and Ravnica, both mountains, are also located in the surrounding area. Castello di Muggia, a castle, and Castelliere di Elleri, a ruin site, are likewise nearby.

In the wider regional area around Boršt are the Museo di Muggia e del Territorio and the Risiera di San Sabba, both museums. Vedetta di Moccò is a viewpoint in the wider regional area. The places mentioned extend the range from mountain landscapes and viewpoints to museums, a castle and a ruin site, without equating their geographical areas.

Cycling Route

Cycling Route K1 through Refošk Country passes through Boršt. It is considered suitable for more experienced cyclists and includes several climbs and descents.
