Črni Kal: History and Karst Edge

Črni Kal offers a concentrated view of historic buildings and paths through a highly varied karst landscape. Above the Rižana Valley, on the edge of the Karst, lie the remains of San Sergio Castle. They are a historic monument dating from the 11th century. In the village, sacred architecture, a historic residential building and routes through the landscape complete this picture.

Culture

The Church of St. Valentine in Črni Kal is listed as a monument of sacred architecture. It has a separate bell tower dating from 1802. Due to the special ground conditions, the tower is noticeably leaning. Benko House is a residential building constructed in 1489 by Andrej and Benko. Its interior is not accessible to visitors. At the same time, it is considered the oldest example of vernacular architecture in Slovenia. The fortress of Črni Kal is known as San Sergio Fortress and is listed as a secular architectural monument. Thus, different building functions and classifications stand side by side in the village: a sacred church building, a historic residential building and a secular fortress complex.

The buildings also differ in their historical reference points: Benko House is associated with the year 1489, the bell tower with 1802 and San Sergio Castle with the 11th century. In this way, the cultural history of Črni Kal can be viewed across several periods and different building types without equating the individual monuments.

Landscape

Route P3 continues along a gravel track to the rocky edge above Črni Kal. Along its course, it passes through the highly varied terrain of the karst edge, with its rich flora. The surface, destination and landscape area are clearly distinguishable features: the gravel track characterizes the route, the rocky edge marks its stated endpoint, and the karst terrain defines the described section of the landscape. A visitor center is located in Črni Kal below the viaduct.

The gravel track, the rocky edge and the highly varied terrain do not represent the same characteristic, but describe different parts of the route.
