Gradin: Church, Karst Landscape and Hotels

Gradin is characterised by stone houses and is known for its melodious local dialect. From Gradin, there is a beautiful view of the Šavrin Hills and the hilly karst landscape. There are numerous streams and waterfalls near Gradin.

Culture

The Holy Cross Church in Gradin is a single-nave church with a 3/8 presbytery, a bell tower in the centre of the main façade, a clock, semicircular openings, a stone portal and a sacristy. It is said to have been consecrated in 1782. Restoration work was carried out in 1926, 1931 and most recently in 2001. Weapons were stored in the higher Starci Tower, while the second tower monitored access to the fortification. The two towers therefore represent different functions within the fortification.

The wider region around Gradin is also home to various examples of cultural history. The Museo di Muggia e del Territorio is a museum in the wider region around Gradin. The Castello di Muggia is a castle there. The Risiera di San Sabba is a museum in the wider surrounding area, and the Castelliere di Elleri is a ruin site there.

Cycling

The “Po poti tartufov in špargljev (K7)” cycling route runs through Gradin between Abitanti and Pregara. The 35-km cycling route is challenging.

Landscape

The immediate surroundings of Gradin include several mountains: Mount Semi is located near Gradin, as are Mount Brajkov Vrh and Mount Ravnica. Mount Žbevnica is located in the surrounding area of Gradin.

South of Trebeše, the Slap pri Starcih waterfall can be seen along the route between Gračišče and Gradin; it is fed by the Veli vir stream.
