Babiči near Koper – Hotels, Church Ruins and Cycling Routes

Above Babiči, the ruins of a church dedicated to Saint John, or Ivan, from the 15th century can be seen. A Gothic triumphal arch with Gothic architectural elements has been preserved at the church ruins. The nave of the church was redesigned in the 17th century. Here, history is visible in preserved architectural elements and present-day uses.

Culture

The townscape also contains tangible evidence of earlier forms of construction and use. Near Komareta in Babiči stands an old house dating from 1885 to 1890. In Babiči near Kamareta, a formerly one-room house is now used as a stable. At Babiči 26, there is a thatched-roof “lupa” outbuilding for carts and the storage of other items. The three examples differ in age, design and function, making the historic traces visible at several points throughout the village.

Landscape

The agricultural landscape of Babiči includes fields and vineyards. Babiči is part of Koper’s green rural surroundings, characterised by typical villages and numerous cycling, hiking and themed trails between the sea, the Istrian hills and the Karst edge. The landscape aspect of the village is therefore described just as concretely as its historic heritage.

Cycling Routes

Two named routes in the cycling network pass through Babiči. The challenging 38-kilometre cycling route “Kdor išče, ta najde (K15)” runs through Babiči from Vanganel via Babiči in the direction of Pomjan. The route offers views of the Poljanska buža, the Supot waterfall and several old mills. Another cycling route, “Sui sentieri della Toscana Istriana”, follows a circular course from Marezige via Babiči and onward in the direction of Župančiči. This route is suitable for MTB, eMTB and gravel bikes.
