Culture

The Church of the Assumption in Dekani is the main highlight. It is a single-nave Gothic church dating from the 13th century. Its Gothic presbytery has a natural-stone vault displaying the coats of arms of Bishop Valaresso and other families. The church also has a 25-metre-high bell tower in the style of an Aquileia bell tower, built in 1841. Another religious building can be found at the Dekani cemetery: the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was built in 1858.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

Every year at the beginning of October, the Dekani Tourist Association organises a traditional mass hike along the Dekani–Tinjan–Dekani loop route.

The Parenzana also leads to Dekani, along a road closed to cars. The route is also called “Pot zdravja in prijateljstva”. At 123 kilometres long, it is a cycling and hiking trail that follows a former narrow-gauge railway from Trieste through Slovenia to Poreč.

A separate cycling loop is “Pot na Tinjan – od morja do kamna” (K5). The 27-kilometre route passes through Miši in Dekani, features challenging climbs and offers views of the Gulf of Trieste, the Gulf of Koper, the Osap Valley and the Karst coast.

Surroundings

Several cultural destinations can be found in the area around Dekani. These include the Museo di Muggia e del Territorio, a museum, Castello di Muggia, a castle, and the Risiera di San Sabba, a museum. Vedetta di Moccò and Vedetta Alice are also nearby; both are viewpoints.

The immediate surroundings of Dekani also include Castelliere di Elleri, a ruin site, as well as Monte Zuccherino, a mountain, and Monte Castellier, also a mountain.
