Koper can be explored through several specific places and themes: Venetian-influenced architecture, museum culture, the Ĺ kocjanski Zatok nature reserve, wine experiences and a clearly described circular route.

History and Culture

Koper’s city centre has an architectural heritage strongly influenced by the Venetians. One prominent building is the Koper Bell Tower, also known as the City Tower. The 54-metre-high Romanesque defensive tower houses the bell of Saint Nazarus, cast in Venice in 1333 and the oldest still-functioning bell in Slovenia. The City Tower also offers views over Koper and the surrounding area.

The main building of the Regional Museum of Koper displays archaeological, art-historical, historical and cultural-historical, as well as modern historical collections. With special glasses, the museum also offers a virtual 3D experience in which selected works of art can be viewed three-dimensionally. Koper’s tourist information centre is located on the ground floor of the Praetorian Palace.

Taverna Koper was built around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries as a salt warehouse next to the walls of the old town and the harbour. The venue is used for concerts, exhibitions, workshops and other events.

Nature

In the immediate vicinity of Koper, the Ĺ kocjanski Zatok nature reserve covers 122 hectares and is home to 259 bird species. It combines brackish and freshwater habitats with a lagoon, salt marshes and mudflats. This records both the size of the protected area and its various landscape elements, as well as the number of bird species mentioned.

Things to Do

The K5 route takes 2 to 2.5 hours and is 27 kilometres long. As a circular K5 route, it runs through Koper, Bertoki, Škofije, Plavje, Urbanci, Tinjan, Miši (Dekani), Bertoki and back to Koper. Bertoki therefore appears in the sequence of places both after Koper and again later before the return to Koper.

Wine and Events

The Vinakoper wine boutique in Koper offers a tasting area for independent tastings by individuals and groups of up to 10 people. For groups of more than 10 people, Vinakoper offers guided tours of the wine cellar with tasting by prior arrangement and appointment reservation. The two options therefore differ according to group size and whether the tasting is independent or guided.

Getting There

Koper has a railway station, good road connections by car or bus, and can also be reached by sea. This means connections by rail, road and water.
