Culture and History

The Da-Ponte Fountain acquired its present Baroque appearance in the mid-17th century. It was once the endpoint of a water pipeline that carried water from the nearby hills into the town of Koper. The bell tower of Koper is a 54-metre-high example of Romanesque military architecture and offers views over the town and its surroundings. Its interior houses the oldest bell in Slovenia. It was cast in Venice in 1333 and still rings today. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Nazarius, is likewise one of the largest churches in Slovenia.

Nearly three quarters of the area consists of a brackish-water lagoon with nesting islands, salt marshes and mudflats.
