For a holiday in Koper, historic buildings, event venues and the Škocjanski Zatok nature reserve represent different facets of the town. Its cultural history is reflected in palaces, churches, fountains and a bell tower, while events and a distinctive natural area provide additional focal points.

Culture and History

The Pretorska palača combines Late Gothic, Renaissance and Venetian Gothic architecture. It acquired its present form in the mid-15th century. For guided tours of the Pretorska palača, times at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. were scheduled on selected dates in August; registration was required.

The Da-Ponte Fountain acquired its present Baroque appearance in the mid-17th century. It was once the endpoint of a water pipeline that carried water from the nearby hills into the town of Koper. The chronological sequence of its earlier function and later form shapes the history of this structure.

The bell tower of Koper is a 54-metre-high example of Romanesque military architecture and offers views over the town and its surroundings. Its interior houses the oldest bell in Slovenia. It was cast in Venice in 1333 and still rings today. The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, also known as the Cathedral of Saint Nazarius, is likewise one of the largest churches in Slovenia.

The Pokrajinski muzej Koper houses collections ranging from prehistory to recent history in the Belgramoni Tacco palace complex. The museum also includes the open-air lapidarium of the Pokrajinski muzej Koper, which serves year-round as a venue for music and other events. Prešeren Square is a place for meeting as well as for culture and art.

Taverna Koper served as an important salt warehouse at the old town walls and by Koper’s Mandrač before becoming an important cultural and event centre of the town. It hosts concerts, exhibitions, workshops and other events.

Nature

The Škocjanski Zatok nature reserve complements the historic sites with a clearly defined natural area. Nearly three quarters of the area consists of a brackish-water lagoon with nesting islands, salt marshes and mudflats. This precise composition shapes the character of the protected area and clearly distinguishes it from the stone-built cultural sites in the urban area.
