Hotels in Krkavče: Krkavški kamen and Istrian culture

Krkavče combines sacred architectural history, archaeological sites, everyday Istrian culture and two circular routes featuring the Krkavški kamen: the Krkavški kamen is a 2.5-metre-high menhir with two figurative depictions and a solar nimbus. Together with the parish church, the living museum Hiša Vrešje and traces of older settlements, it creates a varied picture of the village.

Culture

The parish church of Saint Michael the Archangel stands in Krkavče on solid bedrock. The church acquired its present appearance through extensions and alterations in the first half of the 18th century; inside, it has three altars. It is therefore one of the village’s distinctive sacred landmarks, whose architectural form is closely connected with local history.

The archaeological areas of Krkavče also preserve evidence of different periods. Sv. Štefan preserves the ruins of a sacred building and skeletal graves. Gradišče is a prehistoric hillfort with visible fortification walls. In Slovenian Istria, Krkavče is also one of the places where olive branches were woven. These traditional forms of construction, burial and craftsmanship stand side by side in the village.

The Krkavški kamen lies about 500 metres east of the cemetery in the village of Krkavče. A Roman road and a Roman archaeological site were located nearby. The living museum Hiša Vrešje offers guided tours during which visitors can learn about the history and customs of Istria. The ethnological collection depicts life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The interior spaces include a kitchen with an open fireplace.

Routes

The 35-kilometre circular cycling route “Mimo krkavškega kamna (K10)” passes through Krkavče. It is moderately difficult and runs along paved and gravel paths. Its length, difficulty level and surface give the route a clearly defined profile that distinguishes it from the shorter circular hiking route.

The 13-kilometre circular hiking route “Po Šavrinskem gričevju (P19)” begins and ends in Nova vas and passes through Krkavče. Among other places, it runs past the Krkavški kamen and the natural rock platform in Krkavče. This route thus connects the village with two of its described landscape and cultural features, while the cycling route already features the Krkavški kamen in its name.

Cuisine

At House Carcauec, visitors can taste olive oil, table olives preserved in brine and persimmon vinegar. The experience at House Carcauec also includes a presentation of traditional Istrian costumes.
