Hotels in Šmarje: Vineyards, Olive Groves and Culture
Šmarje is one of the settlements with a distinctive landscape character in the Šmarje-Mareziško Hills. A cultural landscape with a mosaic consisting primarily of olive groves and vineyards is preserved on the outskirts of the settlement. This brings together agriculturally shaped areas, views and historic buildings in the surrounding area.
Nature and Landscape
The Šmarje-Mareziško Hills offer views across the entire hinterland of Koper. From Šmarje, you can see the surrounding hills and villages, as well as the Bay of Koper and the Gulf of Trieste. Šmarje also plays an important role in the development of the Dragonja tourist and recreational area. The landscape is not merely present as a backdrop: its mosaic, consisting primarily of olive groves and vineyards, is preserved on the outskirts of the settlement.
Culture
One of the most important buildings in Šmarje is the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The parish church in Šmarje was built on the ruins of an old pre-Romanesque building, probably as early as the 11th century. The interior of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary was renovated in the 1960s. This means that the long history of the building and a significantly more recent alteration to the church interior can be seen side by side in one place.
Culinary Experiences
The winery and olive-growing operation of Ludvika Nazarija Glavine is located in Šmarje pri Kopru. Its wines and distinctive Šmarje olive oil are marketed under the Santomas brand; Santomas sells the wines under its own Santomas brand. The Santomas estate includes almost 24 hectares of vineyards, 5 hectares of olive groves, a modern oil mill, a winery and a tasting room. Wine tastings take place in the tasting room. Lunches or dinners with guided wine tastings are organised at the Santomas estate. As part of a tasting, Santomas also offers a tour of the estate.
Routes
Two routes also pass through Šmarje. The “Across Šmarje down the Dragonja Valley” route runs through the settlement. The Koprski “mare e monti” route also passes through Šmarje. Most of this cycling route follows asphalt, gravel and agricultural roads and is considered mostly undemanding. The two routes therefore mention Šmarje in different contexts: once as part of the route through the Dragonja Valley and once as part of a Koprski cycling route.
