Tinjan: Hotels, Hiking Trails and St. Michael

Tinjan is listed as a settlement monument or settlement heritage unit in the municipal register of monuments and cultural heritage. On this basis, the history of the village is linked to a series of clearly described hiking and cycling routes.

Culture

In the centre of the village of Tinjan stands St. Michael’s Church with a mighty linden tree. On the edge of the village of Tinjan, St. Michael’s Church stands on the walled plateau of a prehistoric fortification. The single-nave church was designed in the Baroque style and built before 1700 on the site of an older 13th-century church.

Hiking

The ascent from Osp to Tinjan is an easy 2.8 km hike with a walking time of one hour and 341 m of elevation gain. This ascent is described as a family outing for children aged three to four.

For the circular route from the Kraški rob Visitor Centre via Stepani, Tinjan, Osp and Stara Gabrovica back to the Kraški rob Visitor Centre, there is a longer version of 10 km with a walking time of three hours and a shorter version of 4.7 km with a walking time of 1.5 hours. Thus, two variants of different lengths are available for the same route.

A 7.8 km hiking route leads from Dekani via Goli hrib, Kolombar, Tinjan and Podgorci to a cascade and back to Dekani; the walking time is 2.5 hours. The hiking route via Dekani and Tinjan is easy and runs along cart tracks and paths.

Cycling

The cycling route “Po poti okrog Tinjana (K2)” is a 38 km circular route that starts and ends in Koper. It is moderately difficult and runs over asphalt, good gravel and cart tracks; a mountain bike is recommended.

Another 27 km cycling route leads from Koper via Bertoki, Škofije, Plavje, Urbanci, Tinjan and Miši in Dekani back to Koper. A challenging cycling route also passes through Tinjan, running over asphalt, gravel roads and cart tracks; it is suitable for mountain biking.

Nature

The cycling route via Tinjan climbs to Tinjan’s 374 m-high summit and offers views of the Gulf of Trieste, Koper and its hinterland, the Osap Valley and the Karst edge, as well as, in clear weather, the Julian and Carnic Alps and the Dolomites.
