Koštabona combines recognised settlement heritage with historic religious buildings and the Water Sources Trail, known in Slovenian as “Pot vodnih virov”. Between its elliptical settlement layout, sandstone houses, and traces of a hillfort and fortification, a tangible picture of this place emerges.

Culture

Koštabona has a distinctive elliptical shape. The closely spaced buildings are made of sandstone and adjoin the main road at right angles. Koštabona is recognised as settlement heritage in Slovenia’s register of immovable cultural heritage. The village name also points to the past: it is believed to derive from the Roman fortification Castrum Bonae, which was converted into a medieval defensive tower.

Archaeological finds attest to a prehistoric hillfort near Koštabona. In late antiquity, it was transformed into the strategically important Roman fortification Castrum Bonae, which protected the trade route in the Dragonja Valley. Sv. Helena is named as one of two archaeological sites in Koštabona.

Several churches and a chapel add to the village’s historic character. The Church of St Cosmas and Damian in Koštabona dates from 1446 and has a preserved Gothic presbytery as well as 15th-century frescoes. St Andrew’s dates from the 15th century and stands at the end of Koštabona’s natural rocky spur. It is also listed as a monument in the inventory of the architectural religious heritage of the Municipality of Koper. In the village centre stands a chapel dedicated to Blessed Deacon Elias, built in 1742 and featuring an impressively sculpted main portal.

Nature

The Water Sources Trail begins in the square in front of the old school, or village centre, of Koštabona. An information board marks the trail and displays a route map along with a brief explanation. The Water Sources Trail can also be travelled by bicycle.

In the vicinity of Koštabona, the Water Sources Trail leads to Škrline and can continue from there as a circular route back to Koštabona. Around Koštabona, visitors can see cascades, a plunge pool, and rapids on the Dragonja near Škrline. Škrline lies within the Landscape Park of the Dragonja and its tributaries, which is a protected area.
