Gornji Petrovci: Churches, Hiking Trails and Regional Festivals

Gornji Petrovci can be explored through several cultural and local themes.

Culture

The Trinity Church in Gornji Petrovci was built on a Romanesque foundation dating from the 13th century. It stands on Nedelski vrh at an altitude of 355 metres; the area was formerly known for its viticulture. Particularly notable features of the church are a short Romanesque section from the 14th century and a longer Gothic chancel from the 15th century. Both areas are distinguished by intricate stone-carving details.

Another important stop is the Evangelical Church in Gornji Petrovci. It was completed and consecrated in 1824. It acquired its present appearance in 1894/95, when the building was extended and completely renovated in the Romanesque style. Services are held there at 10:00 a.m. on Sundays and public holidays.

Trails and Events

The Pomurska Hiking Trail leads to Gornji Petrovci. Its trail stamp and hiking logbook are located at the Pindža inn near the Trinity Church. The route is well marked and runs through mixed woodland, in places through pine forest, along soft forest paths and partly on roads.

Another hiking route through Goričko follows the Moravske Toplice – Gornji Petrovci – Hodoš route. Every year on 8 February, Prešeren Day, the village also organises the Prešeren Hiking Day. In August, a night hike leads to the Trinity Church, during which shooting stars are observed.

On Trinity Day in May or June, the traditional market “Buča pri Nedeli” is held at the Trinity Church in Gornji Petrovci. In autumn, a traditional festival celebrating the baptism of the must follows, with a Martinmas meal and a cultural programme.

Cuisine and Festivals

The Vrtanek Tourist Association primarily showcases traditional grandmother's cuisine. The association received an award at republic level in Ljubljana for its culinary work. Cooking workshops are also offered.
