Discover Puconci: Protestant History and Hotels

The Evangelical Church in Puconci was built in 1784 and is considered the first brick-built Protestant church in Slovenia. In 1908–1909, it was extensively renovated according to plans by the architect László Takáts and enriched with Secession-style decoration. Inside the Evangelical Church of Aleksander Terplan in Puconci, there is a gallery without supporting columns. Thus, architectural history, a distinctive interior design solution, and the development of the Protestant tradition in Slovenia come together in one place.

Memorial Sites

The Števan Küzmič Memorial House welcomes tourist groups and can provide information about Protestantism as well as documentaries on local history. The house also has a permanent exhibition of Protestant books and documents. Temporary exhibitions are renewed several times a year. The memorial house commemorates Števan Küzmič, whose translation of the New Testament into Prekmurje Slovene in 1771 is considered the basis of the Prekmurje literary language.

A memorial column erected in 1933 marks the site of the first Protestant service and the first baptism in Puconci on October 12, 1783. In addition, Spametnost is dedicated to the Reformation: the monument illustrates ten values highlighted by the Reformation. The two memorial sites focus on different aspects: one is located at a historically defined site, while the other presents Reformation values.

Regional Cuisine

The Dödolijada and culinary exhibition for the Golden Kijanca is the best-known event organized by KTD Puconci. It preserves authentic home-style dishes typical of Prekmurje. At the Dödolijada, visitors of all ages can try preparing Dödoli and other Prekmurje dishes.

The Martinov pohod also combines an event with regional products. As part of the Martinov pohod, a presentation tasting of wines from local winegrowers was held. At the Martinov pohod organized by the Development Institute of the Municipality of Puconci, hikers were welcomed back at the starting point with a warm homemade meal, as well as a market featuring homemade products and products made by local artists.

Landscape

Characteristic meadows can be seen in the municipality of Puconci, fed by the Puconski potok. The stream also used to overflow its banks; this former characteristic is part of the traditional description of the landscape and is not presented as a current condition.

Events

The Biciklijada in Puconci was held for the 24th time on April 26, 2026. It offered four routes with different levels of difficulty, ranging from 17 to 61 kilometers, including a mountain bike route. The range of distances and difficulty levels is just as much a part of the event as the mountain biking option.
