Šalovci – Mills, Natural Features and Cycle Routes

Šalovci combines historical heritage, designated natural features, cycling connections and an event with a history of its own.

Culture and History

The Frimov vodnjak is a developed natural water spring on the road between Šalovci and Markovci in the Frim Forest. The spring was built around 1850 by the noble Frim family. Thus, this site brings together the natural origin of the water and a clearly documented historical connection.

The Solarjev mlin is the oldest building in Šalovci and is partially preserved. The mill was built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It obtained its water from the Krka; a water channel ran alongside the mill. The structural remains therefore preserve both the name of the oldest building in the village and its connection to a former watercourse.

The Vaški zvonik Šalovci was built in the 19th century by the evangelical community of the time. Today, the bell tower is classified as immovable cultural heritage of local significance. Its origins and its current classification are among the explicitly identified cultural features of Šalovci.

In Goričko Landscape Park in the municipality of Šalovci, visitors can see the Žido-Lenaršičev mill. The mill has the only still-functioning wood-gas engine in Slovenia. This wood-gas engine can be started for visitors by prior arrangement with the owner. The visit and demonstration are named as separate possibilities: the mill is open to visitors, while starting the engine requires prior agreement with the owner.

Nature and Water

The Velika Krka Valley and its tributaries are designated as natural features of ecological, hydrological and zoological importance. They belong to the Natura 2000 protected area and Goričko Landscape Park. These designations highlight the valley and its tributaries’ different protection and natural-value dimensions without reducing them to a single characteristic.

Near Križevci, the artificial Križevsko Lake lies along a stream. It covers approximately 2 ha and is particularly popular with anglers. The stated area remains an approximate figure.

Cycling

The Volčin-Budinci-TNC-Volčin cycling route is less demanding and is also suitable for families. The route leads from the centre of Volčin via Budinci to TNC Peterloug and back to Volčin. Its starting point, intermediate stop and return are therefore explicitly defined in the route.

The EuroVelo 13 route also passes through Šalovci, running from Martinje to Pince. This route is 66 km long and paved. Its route through Šalovci, length and surface are therefore all specified.

Local Flavours

The “Kapüstni den” is held permanently at the Volčin event venue in the centre of Šalovci and has been held in the village of Šalovci since 2002. At the 21st “Kapüstni den”, competition teams from the municipality of Šalovci and the surrounding area compete in cooking Segedin; they also present other cabbage dishes. The event thus combines its permanent venue, its beginnings in 2002 and the cooking competition with additional cabbage dishes.
