Discover Murska Sobota: Culture, Nature and Hotels
A specific gateway to Murska Sobota is the Pomurje Museum: it is housed in a Renaissance castle in the city park. The city combines this cultural site with parkland, regional history and various outdoor activities.
Culture and History
The permanent exhibition at the Pomurje Museum illustrates the River Mur and its mills, mineral waters and various farming methods. It also includes archaeological finds relating to prehistoric communities, the Pomurje region during the Roman Empire and Slavic settlement.
Historical traces are also present outside the museum. St Nicholas Church in Murska Sobota is first mentioned in 1297. The central Protestant complex with the church was built between 1907 and 1910 in the Neo-Gothic style according to plans by Ernő Gerey. The Murska Sobota Park Theatre represents the contemporary cultural scene: throughout the year, it hosts numerous theatre, music, dance, film and other events for different target groups.
Nature and Activities
Murska Sobota City Park is a 9.5-hectare castle park surrounding the former Szapary Castle. The park also contains 19 stone lithopunctures by Marko Pogačnik. Thus, the historic park and a contemporary work of art meet in the same place.
EXPANO is located on the outskirts of Murska Sobota, by Soboško jezero. EXPANO presents Pomurje’s tourism, nature, crafts and cultural heritage in a unique exhibition featuring innovative technology. A motor skills park is located next to the EXPANO pavilion. The combination of the exhibition, lake and activity facilities remains tied to this specific site.
The Fazanerija Recreation Park has a fitness trail with 18 stations. The park also has walking and hiking paths that are suitable for Nordic walking. PANEXFUN also offers outdoor activities: the offer takes place outdoors and includes Archery Tag, disc golf, footgolf and paintball. In summer, Klub jadralcev na deski Štrk offers beginner and advanced windsurfing courses.
Cycling Routes and Excursions
The 20-kilometre international European Amazon Cycling Route runs along the Mur, passing Murska Sobota and Lendava.
Another cycling tour leads from Murska Sobota to Goričko. It is moderately difficult and unsuitable for families with small children. The route runs along paved and compacted gravel roads, so both road surfaces are part of the tour described.
The Pot užitka begins in Murska Sobota. This route is suitable for a family or group cycling excursion. This means that different route characteristics are presented alongside one another: the tour to Goričko is classified as moderately difficult, while the Pot užitka is explicitly associated with a family or group excursion.
Food and Drink
On Slovenska ulica, the “Sočna vilica” street food festival invites visitors to enjoy dishes, wines from local winemakers, beer and sweet specialities. The culinary selection combines food with regional wines, beer and sweet offerings within a specific event format.
