An old town with a historic name
Saky got its name from the Scythians, the Persians and Catherine II, Empress of Russia. In antiquity, the Scythians ruled Crimea for several centuries. The word “Saky” dates from that period. In Persian, Saky is the name of the Scythian tribe. The Russian empress, who was interested in ancient history, adopted the Persian name for the town.
Saky as a spa town since 1827
The first health resorts in Saky were established in 1827, followed a few years later by a large military hospital. This makes Saky the oldest mud-bath resort in all of Russia.
Today, Saky is one of the fastest-growing spa towns on the western coast of Crimea. It is a holiday destination with a well-developed infrastructure and a reputation as one of Crimea’s best destinations for family holidays and spa stays.
Sights in Saky
The town enjoys more than 2,500 hours of sunshine a year and has attractive sandy beaches with gently sloping shores, like those found all along the western Crimean coast. This makes it an ideal place for a family beach holiday in Crimea. The town’s main attraction and pride is its spa park, home to around eighty species of trees and shrubs. There are monuments to Lesya Ukrainka, Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol and other writers, commemorating their stays and treatment in Saky.
Lake Saky itself is one of the best-known sources of therapeutic mud and one of the town’s main sights.
Wellness and spa treatments
Saky offers treatment for arthritis and polyarthritis of various kinds, bone and muscle injuries, joint disorders, spinal cord injuries and disorders of the peripheral nervous system, the effects of burns, inflammatory gynecological conditions, cerebral palsy, and male and female infertility. Well-known spa facilities include the Poltava-Krym Sanatorium, the Saki Sanatorium, the Sakropol Sanatorium, the Tanger Sanatorium and the Yurmino Sanatorium. Around 70,000 guests visit the spa facilities each year; two-thirds come on organized trips and the remaining third travel independently. Guests from Ukraine and Russia share the resort town, while visitors from Western countries are relatively rare.
Saky products: mud cosmetics and mineral water
Saky has more than 100 different natural sites used for spa treatments, from deposits of therapeutic mud to various mineral springs. Cosmetics are made from the mud. Therapeutic mineral water is also bottled in Saky, with 40 million bottles sold in Russia and Ukraine.
Accommodation in Saky’s spa facilities and hotels
Dozens of spa facilities, hotels and holiday homes cater to visitors and provide accommodation. Hotels in Saky are quite affordable: a double room costs from around €30 per night.
Getting there
The best way to reach Saky from Western Europe is to fly to Simferopol Airport and continue by bus or train. Simferopol Airport is just 37 kilometres away. Saky has a railway station and a bus station. Please note: you need a Russian visa to travel to Saky.
Distinguish the history of the spa town, the salt lake and present-day conditions
Saky has historical associations with its salt lake, mud and spa treatments. Saky is presented as a spa town, not just a beach destination; Yevpatoria provides the regional context. Historical information about Saky helps explain the town, but does not replace current advice.
If you are planning spa treatments or a coastal stay, compare spa stays and hotels in Yevpatoria, sanatoriums, Yalta and Crimean beaches on more than just distance. Medical suitability, operators, access, accommodation and the return journey must all be checked separately for your travel dates.
Before planning, check for updates on entry requirements and documents, getting there and transport, travel preparation, staying safe while travelling, health and travel first-aid kits and wellness and relaxation. The official travel and safety advice for Ukraine takes precedence over outdated information about spa treatments, transport and entry requirements.
