Discover Biskupice: Chapel, Fašank and Cycling Routes

A defining landmark of Biskupice is the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. It was consecrated on 16 August 1997 by Archbishop Jan Graubner. Every year in August, a pilgrimage takes place at the chapel around the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The timing is therefore centered around the feast and not on one specific fixed date.

Culture and History

Several monuments and sacred works of art preserve specific memories of the town. A stone cross erected in 1866 commemorates a cholera epidemic in Biskupice. Another stone cross was created in 1752 and moved in 1932 from the road to Velký Ořechov into a garden. The Liberation Monument was made and presented to the residents on the first anniversary of the liberation of Biskupice, on 1 May 1946. It was later moved to the main road, where it remains today.

A statue of the Virgin Mary was erected in 1946 by the now-disbanded Association of Catholic Women. In 2001, it was moved to the open space in front of the chapel. Near the center of Biskupice, a Baroque statue of Saint John of Nepomuk stands on the bank of the stream. It was created in 1796 on commission from the farmer Martin Vítek and is not an ordinary regional work of its time. North of Biskupice, a monument also commemorates the crew of a crashed aircraft. The Romanian air gunner Gheorghe Popescu was killed, while pilot Paul Lazaroiu was able to escape by parachute.

Traditions and Summer

The local Fašank tradition includes a procession of costumed groups with music, as well as singing and dancing. This custom has been observed in Biskupice since time immemorial and is intended to be preserved for future generations. As part of the tradition, the masked participants are served doughnuts, pastries or meat, and above all spirits and beer.

The open-air cinema is also one of the local events. Its screenings take place at the football grounds of TJ TATRAN. The Biskupice open-air cinema was held for the first time in 2018.

Cycling Routes and Paths

Several described routes connect Biskupice with the surrounding area. The Luhačovice–Biskupice loop leads to Biskupice and then to the local airfield. It is 11 kilometers long and intended for road bikes. The Small Spa Loop runs via Luhačovice and Biskupice to the local airfield, Řetechov and Pozlovice. This loop is 22 kilometers long and intended for trekking bikes and mountain bikes.

Another route is used by cyclists and pedestrians. Of its total length of 3,600 meters, 1,500 meters lie within the cadastral area of Biskupice. From Ottovka, the path follows the right bank of the Luhačovický potok along a cycle path to the edge of Biskupice.

Transport and Region

Public bus routes with three stops run through Biskupice, as does a railway line with one stop. České dráhy currently offer no services at Biskupice u Luhačovic station; no České dráhy trains currently stop there.
