Dolná Ždaňa: Folk Architecture, Trinity Church and Vtáčnik

Dolná Ždaňa has preserved the character of a traditional linear village with authentic folk architecture.

Culture

In the lower part of Dolná Ždaňa stand stone-built three-room houses. They date from the development of the village in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The settlement began developing in the mid-14th century; Dolná Ždaňa belonged to the estate of Revište Castle.

Several individual monuments form part of the local historical heritage. Dolná Ždaňa has a roadside statue of Saint Florian, as well as a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. A memorial plaque commemorates the citizens who were tortured and killed in the Second World War. Another memorial plaque is dedicated to the writer Elena Čepčeková.

The Trinity Church in Dolná Ždaňa was completed in 1847 in the Classicist style, with lingering Baroque elements. The building has a single nave and a polygonal chancel termination. Its tower is integrated into the gabled façade. The church preserves a small side altar with sculptural drapery, as well as six small sculptures from the mid-19th century.

Nature

Medokýš is designated as a mineral spring in Dolná Ždaňa. The western part of the municipal territory lies on the eastern slopes of the Vtáčnik mountain range, which consists predominantly of andesite. The Vtáčnik slopes associated with Dolná Ždaňa are forested with fir and beech stands.

Village Centre

The municipal territory of Dolná Ždaňa stretches along the right bank of the Hron River; the Prochotský potok stream flows through the area. The centre consists of a public space defined by the church, a small park and public greenery. The Prochotský potok flows through this space, and a local road runs through it.

Getting There and the Region

The nearest railway station is Hliník nad Hronom, 1 km from Dolná Ždaňa. It is located on the electrified railway line 150 from Zvolen to Nové Zámky. The line continues directly to Bratislava.

Dolná Ždaňa currently belongs to the Hlinické Pohronie microregion. This microregion was established in 1999 to develop the municipalities, the region and tourism.
