Horná Ves is situated in the picturesque landscape of the Kremnické vrchy at the confluence of the Lúčanský potok and the Rudnica. The location and the village’s healthy environment are suitable for leisurely walks as well as more demanding hikes. At the same time, the history of Horná Ves is deeply rooted in the cultural and mining history of the surrounding area.

Culture

In the centre of Horná Ves stands a Baroque national cultural monument column featuring a sculpture of the Holy Trinity from 1710. The Trinity Column was moved from Kremnica to Horná Ves in 1776. Before that, it had stood in front of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kremnica. The Baroque column is a votive ensemble created after the plague epidemic of 1710.

History

At the southern entrance to the village is the portal of the Hlboká adit. The adit was driven between 1519 and 1613 and is 7,050 metres long. Its functions included drainage, transport and exploration. The Hlavná adit also runs beneath Horná Ves and is 15,821 metres long. It empties into the Hron River near Žiar nad Hronom.

Technical remnants are also part of this history: The Primaverka hydroelectric power station was built in Horná Ves in 1896 with an output of 110 kW. It was used to power mining machinery in the fourth shaft in Kremnica. The mining history of Horná Ves is closely linked to the history of gold mining in Kremnica. Ochre obtained from the mine water of the Hlboká adit was processed during the First Czechoslovak Republic by the Farbová továreň bratov Strobentzových in Horná Ves and sold as a dye to the chemical industry.

Nature

The landscape of the Kremnické vrchy provides the natural setting for routes through Horná Ves and its surroundings. The confluence of the Lúčanský potok and the Rudnica is part of the local geographical setting. The location and the village’s healthy environment are expressly suitable for walks and more demanding hikes.

Trails and Sports

The second section of the Kremnica hiking trail runs from Ihráč to Nevoľné. From there, a yellow-marked route leads to Horná Ves; here, the trail joins a blue-marked route back to Kremnica. The route to Kremnický štít is part of an educational trail.

Horná Ves has a multipurpose sports area for volleyball, basketball and nohejbal. In winter, the area is converted into an ice rink for hockey players and skaters.
