Selce – Nature, Culture and Historical Traces

Selce combines a distinctive landscape with archaeological traces, traditional architectural forms, and recurring local events. Between the Litava area, the Keltské chodníčky educational trail, and the cultural sites in Závoz, you will encounter different sides of the village, spanning a period from medieval remains to contemporary events.

Landscape

The cadastral territory of the municipality of Selce belongs to the Slovenské stredohorie geomorphological unit and the Krupinská planina subunit, in whose western part it lies. Most of the cadastral territory consists of a moderately dissected inversion hilly landscape. Floodplain foxtail meadows and wet meadows lie in the valley of the Krupinica. The southern part of Selce's cadastral territory also extends into the Litava Site of European Importance (SKUEV0036), which covers an area of 2,629.70 hectares.

Culture and History

One of the prominent historical points of reference is Hrádok. The cultural monument is protected and registered in the central register of cultural monuments of the Slovak Republic under registration number Ss/2192. The Hrádok archaeological site is associated with finds of Roman coins and jewellery. Remains of a medieval church have also been preserved in Selce.

The folk architecture also reflects the history of the village. In the 19th century, stone-built, masonry three-room houses with thatched roofs formed part of the village landscape. Large two-storey granaries with arcades were derived from anti-Ottoman watchtowers. At the end of the 19th century, women in Selce made so-called Hontian lace.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes is located in Závoz. It was expanded in the 1950s after larger statues of the Virgin Mary and Saint Bernadette had been acquired. A gathering has been held at the chapel every September since the end of the Second World War. Závoz is also home to three stone cellars recognised as war graves, which served as refuges for local families during the Second World War.

Trails and Events

The Keltské chodníčky educational trail leads from the Čachovo recreational centre to the Hrádok archaeological site. The trail is approximately 5.6 km long and has eight information boards. Thus, both the route and the presentation of historical information are central to a clearly defined trail.

The local events calendar includes Kutliarsky deň, a traditional recurring culinary event featuring a competition in cooking Kutlové, a tripe goulash. In Selce, the Jánska vatra bonfire is traditionally lit on Stráň. Horský beh Memoriál Jána Kupca is a recurring mountain running event in Čachovo in Selce. An edition was announced for Sunday, 20 September 2026, from 9:30 a.m., as the 11th running.

Selce has neither a railway track nor a railway station. The nearest connection to passenger rail services is in Zvolen.
