Gemerský Jablonec combines nature, protected habitats, a significant church building, and viticultural traditions in the village and its surroundings.

Nature

The Vodná nádrž Gemerský Jablonec Nature Reserve was established in 2000 and covers 32.029 hectares. It is an important breeding and migratory area for waterbirds. Several endangered and rare bird and plant species have been recorded in the area. Thus, the designated size and the protected area's particular importance for wildlife and plant life are both central features.

The Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area is connected with Gemerský Jablonec and features a pronounced volcanic landscape. It contains volcanic cones, exposed volcanic necks, as well as lava shields and lava flows. More than 60 percent of the protected landscape area's surface is forested. In addition, up to 1,250 plant species have been recorded. Geological formations, forested areas, and the documented diversity of plant life are presented here as different features of the same protected landscape area.

The Novohrad Geopark includes Gemerský Jablonec as one of its Slovak municipalities. Since 2016, the Novohrad Geopark has also been a National Geopark of the Slovak Republic.

History and Culture

The Church of St. Abdon and Sennen stands in the western part of Gemerský Jablonec. It was originally a Romanesque church dating from the middle of the 13th century. Its layout is single-naved; it has a semicircular apse and a built-in tower. Inside, there is a coffered ceiling with painted plant ornamentation from 1703.

Abdon and Sennen is listed in the Central Register of the Monument Fund of the Slovak Republic under number 951/1. This building therefore brings together its original Romanesque period of construction, its specific architectural form, and the ceiling design dating from 1703.
