Nová Bašta is located in the Cerová vrchovina volcanic mountains, in the valley of a tributary of the Gortva. Nová Bašta is also one of the municipalities in the Slovak part of the Novohrad-Nógrád UNESCO Global Geopark.

The cadastral area of Nová Bašta lies within the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. The CHA Beležír protected area extends across this cadastral area and covers an area of 616,744 square metres. The cadastral area is also part of the Cerová vrchovina and Rimavská kotlina Natura 2000 protected area. In addition to its location in the volcanic mountains, this means that several specifically named forms of protection apply to the same cadastral area.

History and Culture

Nová Bašta was first mentioned in writing in 1267. The former name Kostolná Bašta reflected Nová Bašta’s role as a parish centre for the surrounding area. The history of the village is therefore connected both with an early written mention and with an ecclesiastical function.

The Romanesque Roman Catholic Church of St. Stephen in Nová Bašta dates from 1397 and has been rebuilt several times. A fortified church made Nová Bašta a defensive bastion for the surrounding area. Local crafts included stonework and masonry.
