Rimavské Janovce – Heritage Zone, Churches and Trails

Rimavské Janovce first draws attention to its historic centre: it was declared a heritage zone in 1994. Its linear street development forms a small central square, where the Roman Catholic and Calvinist churches are located. Some houses in the heritage zone have preserved original stucco decorations dating from around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Culture

The historic buildings in the centre include two manor houses with distinctly different architectural features. The Törökovská manor house is a single-storey late Baroque building from 1800 with a rectangular floor plan, a mansard roof and side pavilions. The late Classicist manor house at number 47 is also single-storey, but has two wings; it dates from the second half of the 19th century and has a rectangular floor plan and a hipped roof.

The Church of St John the Baptist in Rimavské Janovce is a single-nave building dating from around the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries, with a semicircular apse. It is originally Romanesque and was formerly a Benedictine monastery church. The former Benedictine monastery stood on the north side of the church.

The Reformed Church in Rimavské Janovce is originally Gothic and dates from the early 14th century. It has a wooden, flat coffered ceiling from 1792. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Rimavské Janovce is also part of the Gothic Route tourist trail.

Geographical setting

A geothermal spring discovered in 2000 in the cadastral area of Rimavské Janovce is currently used in the Kurinec–Zelená voda recreational area. The Kurinec Reservoir is a tourist attraction and is connected to Rimavské Janovce by a cycle path.

Rimavské Janovce is connected to Rimavská Sobota by road II/531 and a railway line for passenger and freight trains.

Cycling

The planned Močiar–Rimavské Janovce cycle route is to run separately from the main road and thus not be endangered by passenger cars and lorries. Its planned length is 1,519.69 metres. It is to begin at a bridge in the Močiar settlement; from there, the route is to continue along an existing unpaved field road and the embankment on the Rimava, connecting to the road at a railway crossing in Rimavské Janovce.
